Middle & High School Music

Students participating in music at GFA receive diverse and rich instruction. Students are taught a variety of music styles and learn performance technique, music theory and sight reading skills, ear training, and music history and culture. Music and the arts have a long-standing tradition in Classical Education. As far back as Ancient Greece, an emphasis has been placed on music as a core area of learning. At GFA, music and the arts are emphasized as essential elements to a well-rounded Classical education.

Middle and high school music students participate in four concerts per year and have opportunities to participate in additional, musically enriching performances including: annual choir tour for high school choir students, annual Idaho Music Educators (IMEA) Large Group Choral Festival, IMEA Solo and Ensemble Festival, Treasure Valley Honor Choir or Band, All-State Honor Choir or Band. Music classes offered at GFA include Middle School Band, Middle School Choir, Middle School General Music, High School Jazz Band (auditioned ensemble), Una Voce Ensemble (auditioned ensemble), and Academy Choir. In addition, Mrs. Shatto has offered private voice lessons as her schedule has allowed. All high school students also have the option to participate in the student-led praise team which leads the worship portion of weekly chapel.

Recent accomplishments of the music department include an invitation for the Academy Choir to perform at the annual Idaho Music Educator’s Association Conference in November 2016 and a live performance on radio station 89.5 KTSY in December 2016. Recent choir tours have been to Lyons, Colorado, Central and Western Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. In April of 2017, the music department will be presenting a production of the popular musical, “Godspell.”

Elementary Music

The Elementary Music program at Greenleaf Friends Academy is a vital, as well as fun, part of our students’ learning.  Classes for grades K-4 consist of textbook curriculum, singing, instrument playing (many different hand instruments and world drums), movement, music history, musical games and activities, preparing for performances, and critical listening and thinking activities.  We work together in our classes to develop music appreciation, experience and memorization and social skills.  Classes, on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week, also include a time of prayer and Bible verses.  All 5th graders are in band with Mrs. Shatto and learn bells with Mrs. Whitley.

Worship in song is during our chapels on Wednesdays.  Program performances are in November, December and March, giving students an opportunity to perform as a large group, in ensembles and as soloists.  A variety of music genres are taught that compliment our school mission.  Our after-school elementary choir, The Great Day Singers, performs in the community at various events and includes a Choir Tour in the spring.

Elementary music teacher, Beth Carico, is in her 6th year at GFA and previously taught music in public schools in Caldwell and Nampa. She has worked to develop a quality music education for the students that she loves to teach!  Music classes are held in a portable adjacent to the elementary building. Any questions about the music program can be directed to Mrs. Carico by email or by calling the school at (208) 459-6346.
